Manta Rays & Whale Sharks
This itinerary starts in northern Maldives to focus on Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay (world famous for the large aggregation of of manta rays) along with whale sharks that frequent the area during this time of year. After our days in Baa Atoll, for 2027 we're headed to the northern atolls on our liveaboard (Raa- Haa Daalu - Haa Halifu - Shaviyani - Noonu - Lhaviyani - North Male) for the rest of our diving adventure. This is a one-way trip from Dharavandhoo to Malé.
Group Leader:
Kim Randall has a wealth of travel and underwater experience. Kim is located in Califfornia, in the SF Bay Area, and is passionate about diving, marine encounters and photography. This trip has run for over 9 years. Kim can't wait to share this unforgettable experience with you.
Trip Information:
This route is planned to maximize the amount of time spent with manta rays and whale sharks. This trip is planned around the optimal time to see large numbers of mantas together (based on seasons, currents, moon cycles, plankton blooms and such), makingit an unforgettable experience.
You are responsible for getting yourself to Male International Airport (MLE). A short domestic flight (included in the package) will be required to Dharavandhoo Island for a three night (Sept 30-Oct 3, 2027) stay to explore Hanifaru Bay & surrounding area with the large aggregations of manta rays (and often whale sharks).
We'll then board the liveaboard vessel (Oct 3-13 2027) and begin our diving journey. Depending on the manta/whale shark activity, we'll dive in Baa and then begin our journey north. This trip is designed for divers who have their AOW certification, at least 50 dives (strongly recommended), and Nitrox. Courses can be taken on board.

What Divers Are Saying:
"The snorkeling and diving in the Maldives is spectacular. Viewing 50+ mantas in one outing, was definitely a highlight. Such beautiful and majestic animals. And swimming with 2 young whale sharks was another treat. The gentle giants are mesmerizing to watch. Thank You, Kim for another wonderful trip!"

The above trip routing is designed to visit spots most frequented by manta rays which aggregate here during this time of the year, including Hanifaru Bay in Baa atoll. The trip starts on the island of Dharavandhoo which means a one-way domestic flight to the island (included) is required after you arrive into Malé. Our island boutique hotel is just minutes from all the manta/whale shark action. Guests will be encouraged to gather pictures of the mantas seen during the dives/snorkels to submit to the MantaBase to assist with manta ID & research. Data on manta identification and migration is being collected by the Marine Research section of the Ministry of Fisheries in Malé & through the Manta Trust. BONUS: If it is a “new” manta and it is spotted for the third time, the guest can decide on a name and keep track of “their manta” in future.
We'll also be gathering photos for the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme and submitting data to ID any whale sharks we encounter along with supporting their research.
More information about these programs will be shared during the trip.
